Chinese writer who in a work on agriculture mentioned what is now recognized as the first example of biological control of garden pests. His Plants and Trees in the Southern Regions (A.D. 304) notes that certain carnivorous ants could successfully protect mandarin oranges from insects that would normally infect the plants.
