Holography is the art of recording images with coherent light. A hologram, at its simplest, is a photographic recording of an interference pattern. The term "holography" was coined by Dr. George Stoke of Polaroid's research facilities, one of the initial leaders in the field of laser images.

Most holograms work with one wavelength of laser light. The image to be made into a hologram is illuminated with laser light at the chosen frequency. Each point blocks and reflects light at one point or another during the phase of the wave. The interference from these reflected light waves is recorded on a photographic plate. Then, shining light on the image from the same type of light source allows the person viewing the image to see the reflections at the same phase difference as was in the original. Coherent light that is, light that is consistently emitted with the same...
