Austrian-American applied mathematician who discovered the fundamental Geiringer equations for plastic deformations of the plane in mathematical plasticity theory. Geiringer also studied the concept of the probability of a hypothesis and applied probability theory to population genetics, applying Mendelian principles. After the death of her husband, Richard von Mises, she edited, defended, and elaborated upon his frequentist theory of probability and completed his unfinished manuscript on a mathematical theory of compressible fluid flow.
