American surgeon best known for inventing the Heimlich maneuver to expel food that might otherwise cause a person to choke to death. Heimlich developed this procedure in the early 1970s after noting that the accepted method of hitting a person on the back was usually unsuccessful. It has been widely taught, and both the procedure and the name are well-known throughout most of the world.
