Australian cell biologist known for his work on true cell hybrids, in which the nuclei of the parent cells coalesce. This work brought him worldwide acclaim and sparked productive research in genetic characteristics of various cell types in Europe and the United States. His work on cell biology led to his appointment as Director of Research of the British Empire Cancer Campaign at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Oxford.
