English physiologist who shared the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Otto Loewi. Dale conducted pioneering research in experimental pharmacology and chemotherapy. His work included studying pituitary hormones, the effect of secretin on pancreatic cells, the effect of ergot on the activity of epinephrine, the effect of epinephrine on the sympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system, the role of acetylcholine in neurotransmission, and other regulatory mechanisms, providing insights into the chemical mechanisms that direct physiological functions.
