1827-1861
British anatomist who wrote an influential book about anatomy that continues to be used today. Gray was a teacher of anatomy and curator of the medical museum at St. George's Hospital in London. Gray, with the aid of colleague and illustrator H. Vandyke Carter, authored and published Gray's Anatomy in 1858. The work was compiled from Gray's own dissection research and remains. Organized by terms rather than sections of the body, Gray's innovative work has, with several revisions, remained the definitive text on the subject of anatomy.
