French aviator who made a variety of recordbreaking flights in Europe before World War I. Farman achieved Continent-wide fame when, on January 13, 1908, he became the first European to fly a one-kilometer (0.62 miles) closed circuit. At the Rheims Air Show in August 1909, Farman won additional honors, setting a new distance-flown record of 180 kilometers (more than 100 miles) with a flight of just over three hours.
