The Conflict

When Family Lavalas, a political party led by Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was awarded most of the seats in the Senate by the Provisional Electoral Council, the Group de Convergence, a coalition of opposition parties in Haiti, called for the nullification of the results of the May 21, 2000, legislative elections. Unable to reach a compromise with Family Lavalas, the opposition coalition boycotted the presidential elections. When Aristide won the presidential elections in November the Haitian government was reprimanded by the Clinton administration in the United States and the Group de Convergence threatened to set up an alternative government.
