English mathematician who worked on spherical trigonometry and the foundations of calculus. Young was dissuaded from studying medicine by her family, taking up mathematics instead. With her husband, mathematician William Young, she published over 200 papers and several books that were highly respected; most of these, however, were published only under his name because women were not yet accepted in the sciences. She was awarded the Gamble Prize by Girton College for her contributions to mathematics.
