The Cuban Missile Crisis is a prominent example of surveillance technology thwarting global thermonuclear war. In 1962 U.S. satellites and high flying U-2 reconnaissance aircraft saw that the Cuban military was building a nuclear missile strike force, a situation intolerable to the United States. The resolution of the crisis eventually led to a more stable relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union.
