1858-1932

Italian mathematician and logician best known for introducing into mathematics the axioms that bear his name. Peano's axioms provided for a purely logical derivation of the arithmetic of natural numbers. He also submitted to rigorous criticism the foundations of projective geometry and presented the first statement of vector calculus. Peano was a mathematics professor at the University of Turin (1890-1932) and spent much of his time after 1900 developing an international language (Interlingua).
