Italian mathematician who studied astronomy and optics, and designed sundials. Born in Venice, he never attended university but his father tutored him in music, philosophy, and mathematics. Benedetti was court mathematician from 1558 to 1566; the Duke of Savoy then appointed him ducal mathematician and philosopher. He also taught at the University of Turin.
