Physician who with Ernest Wydner was the first to show that tars from tobacco smoke could cause cancer in mice. This was the first of many studies that became progressively more convincing at showing a direct link between cigarette smoking and many diseases, including cancer and heart disease. These studies, originally vigorously attacked by the tobacco industry, were eventually acknowledged to be accurate by the industry.
