English physiologist who was considered by many to be the foremost physiologist of his time. Starling made significant contributions to numerous areas involving body function. Most importantly, he formulated Starling's hypothesis of the capillaries, which modeled the forces dictating fluid movement through capillary walls. He devised his "law of the heart" which stated that the force of cardiac contraction was directly related to amount of blood within the chamber, and coined the term hormone.
