Swedish mathematician best known for his discovery of an important transformation that simplified solutions of quintic equations. Bring was born in Ausas, Sweden. After studying at Lundh for seven years, he taught history there, first as a reader, then as professor beginning in 1779. The library at Lund houses eight volumes—in his own handwriting—posing questions and possible answers to problems in geometry, algebra, analysis, and astronomy.
