1840-1912
French mathematician who did important work in geometry. Lemoine's contributions were underappreciated during his lifetime, in part because his methods—though shorter, more sophisticated, and more elegant than others that existed at that time—were difficult to understand and to follow. In addition to his mathematical skills, Lemoine was an accomplished musician, joining a respected chamber orchestra. He also worked as a civil engineer and edited a mathematical journal for several years before his death.
