American mathematician who, in addition to his important work in algebra and group theory, helped to found an American school of mathematics on equal terms with the superior scholarship of foreign universities. Under Moore's leadership, the University of Chicago became the leading American university for the study of mathematics and one of the foremost schools in the world. Moore was elected president of the American Mathematical Society in 1901 and edited the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society from 1899 until 1907.
