American biochemist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1950 with Philip Hench and Tadeus Reichstein for their work regarding the structure and function of adrenal cortex hormones. He is best remembered for his isolation of the steroid hormone, cortisone, from the adrenal gland, which was successfully used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Considered to be one of the foremost endocrinologists of his time, Kendall made several other important contributions to his field.
