The drug popularly called ecstasy (MDMA) belongs to a group of drug compounds that are synthesized, or artificially formed, and sometimes sold on the street. These drugs are often called "designer drugs." They were originally given this name because each was specifically created to imitate the effects of a known illegal substance. However each was slightly altered or "designed" to be unique in an effort to avoid legal restrictions—at least temporarily.
