c. 420-c. 480
Syrian Jewish philosopher who wrote on number theory and geometry. He studied at the Academy in Athens, where he developed a rivalry with Proclus (410-485), then returned to his home in Syria and wrote several works, of which two are known. The Manual of Introductory Arithmetic and How to Take a Ratio Out of a Ratio were both translated and published some 1,400 years after Domninus's death. Introductory Arithmetic seems a reaction to the quasi-mystical principles put forth by another Syrian writer, Nicomachus of Gerasa (c. 60-c. 100), in a work by the same name three centuries earlier.
