1932-

American engineer and astronaut who piloted Gemini 8 (1966), served as command mobile pilot of Apollo 9 (1969), and landed on the Moon as spacecraft commander of Apollo 15 (1971). Following graduation from West Point in 1954, Scott entered the U.S. Air Force, where he attended the Experimental Test Pilot and Aerospace Research Pilot schools. After selection in 1963 for NASA's third astronaut group, he flew on three space flights and served as backup crew on three other missions.
