Argentinean molecular biologist who shared the 1984 Nobel Prize with Georges Köhler and Niels K. Jerne for their contributions to immunology. Their research led to the successful hybridoma technique for the production of pure antibodies in virtually unlimited amounts. The hybridoma technique fuses myeloma cells and sensitized lympocytes to establish a line of antibody-producing cells. In 1975 Milstein and Köhler predicted that hybridoma cultures would be used to provide "designer antibodies" for medical and industrial purposes.
