Chinese-American endocrinologist who was the first to synthesize human growth hormone. Li was also the first to determine the exact amino acid sequence and construction of the hormone ACTH, and the first to isolate human growth hormone. Because of the crucial regulatory functions played by hormones, these discoveries were of great importance to the fields of medicine in general and endocrinology (the study of the hormone-producing glands) in particular.
