Chinese physician who provided one of the first clinical descriptions of a key side effect relating to diabetes mellitus. The disease had first been identified in the West by Arataeus of Cappadocia (fl. A.D. 100s); however, Chen Chuan in c. 700 was one of the first scientists to note the sweetness of urine in patients suffering from that condition.
