1867-1938

American chemist who was a crusader for the American chemical industry. After several years in academia, Herty served as president of the American Chemical Society on the eve of World War I. As a consequence, Herty was involved in American research on chemical warfare, and promoted the American chemical industry in an era of its ascendancy. Herty later lobbied for the establishment of the forerunner of the National Institutes of Health, and he helped develop the technology that allowed the production of pulp and paper from southern pine trees.
