American astronaut who walked on the Moon and commanded the first crew to live aboard the Skylab space station. Conrad's handling of the lunar module Intrepid during the Apollo 12 mission of November 1969 showed that pinpoint lunar landings were possible—a prerequisite for the science-oriented missions that followed. His three-member crew spent a month aboard Skylab in 1973, carrying out scientific experiments and repairing damage that the space station had suffered during launch.
