Scientists were eager to raise the Confederate submarine, the H. L. Hunley, from its watery grave near Charleston, South Carolina. Sunk in 1864 during the Civil War, the sub held the remains of eight sailors when it was raised in 2000. The Hunley, weighing 7.5 tons, disappeared after sinking the Union's U.S.S. Housatonic on February 14, 1864. The sub's location was discovered in 1995 and efforts began to recover the vessel in order to learn more about the people and technology of that era.
