Spanish military officer who commanded the Spanish ship Santiago on its exploration of the Northwest coast of North America. In 1775, accompanied by the Sonora and its commander, Bodega y Quadra, Hezeta and his ship sailed north along the California coast as far as what is now Juneau, Alaska, claiming portions of the coastline for Spain. Spain eventually surrendered its claims in the area.
