American mathematician known for his innovative work in statistical methods that substitute computer power for mathematical formulas. He applies this to statistical analysis of health care evaluations in order to make analysis more realistic and applicable. He was the Max H. Stein Professor of Humanities and Sciences in the Department of Statistics and Department of Health Research and Policy at Stanford University.
