Italian scholar whose writings are a principal source regarding medical treatments administered in medieval monasteries. Bertharius, who served as abbot at the renowned monastic center in Monte Cassino, wrote two treatises, De innumeris remediorum utilitatibus and De innumeris morbis, both concerning monastic medicine. Killed during an Arab invasion of the Italian peninsula in 856, he was later canonized.
