German mathematician who in 1826 founded the first journal devoted entirely to mathematics, known today as Crelle's Journal. Crelle, a civil engineer who worked for the Prussian government, also published a number of mathematical textbooks and many editions of multiplication tables. He early realized the importance of work by Niels Abel, including his proof that quintic equations could not be solved using radicals. Abel and Swiss mathematician Jakob Steiner were major contributors to the premier issue of Crelle's periodical.
