1936-

Cuban-American mathematician who received her Ph.D. from the University of Havana in 1960. She was the first black woman to receive a doctorate there. Her research interests are differential equations and astronomy. After immigrating to the United States during the Cuban Revolution, she joined the mathematics faculty at Bishop College in Dallas Texas. In 1979 she worked with the Minority Institutions Science Improvement program and since 1980 has been a program director for the U.S. Department of Education.
