Spanish navigator who piloted explorers to and around the New World. Alaminos served as pilot on Christopher Columbus's fourth voyage. Alaminos also accompanied Spanish explorer Ponce de León (1460?-1521) as pilot on his voyage of discovery to Florida. Alaminos is credited as being the first to note the existence of the Gulf Stream while piloting for Ponce de León. In addition, Alaminos piloted for Hernán Cortés (1485-1547) as well as Hernández de Córdoba (d. 1518) on their respective explorations of Mexico.
