1939-

British mathematician awarded the Fields Prize in 1970 for his work on Diophantine equations. These equations have been debated for nearly 1,000 years, and his work contributed to the understanding of them. Baker received his doctorate and was elected a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1964. He became a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton in 1970 before returning to teach at Trinity College.
