1932-

American astronaut who piloted the command module Endeavor during the Apollo 15 lunar mission. In 1955 he received his B.S. degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and in 1966 he was chosen by NASA to join the astronaut program. As pilot of Endeavor, he conducted scientific experiments to determine the chemical properties of the Moon, measured the lunar atmosphere, and mapped the Moon's surface. On the return flight to Earth, he performed a 38-minute space walk.
