1899-1964

American surgeon who performed the first surgery for the "blue baby syndrome," a condition known as tetralogy of Fallot. Born in Cullonden, Georgia, he received his doctor of medicine degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and did a residency in surgery at Vanderbilt. His research into trauma and shock led to treatment that saved many lives during World War II. Returning to Johns Hopkins in 1941, he collaborated with Helen B. Taussig on the procedure to correct the "blue baby" and performed the operation in 1944.
