1828-1870

German surgeon and ophthalmologist who founded the university surgical clinic in Berlin, Germany. A competitor of the state Charite hospital, Graefe's free clinic was open to any patient who sought treatment for diseases of the eye. A notable surgeon, Graefe developed an operation to treat glaucoma. He was interested in ways to more unintrusively inspect the eye of the living patient, and he pioneered the clinical use of the opthalmosocope.
