Scottish electrical engineer and inventor known for his work with the medical applications of radiography and the cathode ray. He published the first x-ray photograph taken in Britain, and his work became popular and in demand. In 1908 he outlined the principles of "distant electric vision"—an electronic system of television that used the cathode ray. This patent incorporated the basic process on which modern television cameras and receivers work.
