British chemist who examined the question of heat generation in animals. His work helped to clarify some of the differences between warm-blooded (mostly mammals and birds) and cold-blooded animals, including the origin of body heat. Crawford also worked to develop methods for measuring the specific heat of a variety of substances, helping to set the stage for future developments in thermodynamics and some branches of engineering.
