Subduction zones happen when tectonic plates collide (one goes under another). Many things can happen as a result of this. This particular zone has produced some major earthquakes in the regions which many scientists believe indicate a new subduction zone is forming around algeria and Sicily. This could mean that Afria and Europe would be swithcinbg geologic roles. This hasn't happened for more than 3o million years.
