Mitosis occurs by the cell undergoing a cell cycle, namely (in order), Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase. Its simply, the cell grows and replicating its number of chromosome (Interphase) then the cell makes the chromosome visible under a microscope (Prophase) after which the cell aligns the chromosome at the equator of the cell (Metaphase) and the chromosomes is pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell (Anapahse) and the cell splits up into two a process known as cytokinesis (Telophase) before going back to Interphase to grow and divide.
