Scientists use 'apparent magnitude' to measure the amount of light a star emits and is received by Earth. It is adjusted to the value it would have in the absence of the atmosphere (in other words, corrections are made to accomodate for atmosphere). So, the brighter the object is, the lower the value of its magnitude.
