The black hole has what is called an 'event horizon'. An event boundary is is a boundary in spacetime beyond which anything that happens won't affect someone on the outside. In other words it is a type of 'point of no return'. The gravitational pull of the black hole becomes so great that there's no way to escape it. So, even if light is emitted from the other side of the event horizon, it will never reach the observer.
