The sexual reproduction in many plants is actually asexual which means essentially that they don't need another one of their species to help them reproduce. Animals however do sexual reproduction which requires a mate and the right timing for the sperm to actually penetrate the egg in order to create a zygote. This is why animals, specifically the females come into "heat". This signifies to potential mates that they are "ready" and at the optimal time to concieve young.
