how does the first law of motion relate to friction and inertia?

The first law of Newton states that anything at rest will stay that way unless acted on by an unbalanced force and that anything that is in motion will stay that way unless acted on in the same way. That having been said, inertia is that object in motion and its ability to 'resist' a change in its velocity. Friction can affect this velocity in that it provides resistance to change.
