In a collision, there is a collision force which endures for some amount of time to cause an impulse. This impulse acts upon the object to change its momentum. Two colliding objects will exert equal forces upon each other. If the objects have different masses, then these equal forces will produce different accelerations. There are other factors, but these tend to be the main variables.
