Kingdom Animalia comprises members that include mammals and other vertebrates. Often this is used to reference all non-human members, exlcluding man from the equation. Animals have several characteristics that separate them from other phylum (which is the key concept). Those characteristics are all connected via these shared characteristics which include: being multicellular, heterotrophic, give birth to live young (meaning that they are motile), and they pass through the blastula stage in development inutero. Food, reproduction, structures and the way they create energy for themselves differs widely from other groups.
