The difference between the two types of fluids is the function for which they evolved. Each has a function for the cell. The extracellular fluid surrounds the cells and bathes them while the intercellular fluid is within the cell. Examples of extracellular fluid includes plasma of the blood, interstitial fluids, and lymph fluid. Intercellular water comprises more than 2/3's fo the body's water, with extracellular fluid comprising the other 1/3.
