what is grounding?

Grounding is the electrical principal of avoiding environmental hazards that would produce electrical shock or starting a fire due to an arc or surge in electricity. A 'ground' will take the current, should it arc, into a safe 'zone' such as the earth (hence the term 'ground') or to a more stable solid.
